It appears that Google is undergoing another round of layoffs, this time affecting hundreds of workers in the Bay Area. The focus of these job cuts is primarily on Mountain View, where approximately 702 employees are expected to be impacted. The layoffs will affect various teams, including product, design, and engineering, and are scheduled to take place between March and October.

In addition to job cuts, Google is also closing down all four of its Bay Area child care centers, leading to the layoff of 73 workers. The closure of one of the centers in Mountain View is mentioned to be part of the overall organizational and priority changes that Google has been implementing since last year and plans to continue throughout 2024.

The tech giant clarified that these layoffs are part of ongoing organizational adjustments that have been occurring globally, reflecting changes that started in the previous year. Google had already made significant job cuts in January of the preceding year, eliminating 12,000 positions, and periodic layoffs have been happening in various divisions since then.

Notably, Google’s development plans in the Bay Area have also been experiencing shifts. Last November, the company announced its separation from real estate developer Lendlease, which was involved in two major housing and office projects in Mountain View. Additionally, there have been reports of delays in a megaproject in San Jose, indicating a period of uncertainty and change for Google in the region.
